Messaggi raccomandati

Discus: The Naked Truth

discus_Naked_Truth.jpg

E l'altro:

Discus: Problems and Solutions

discus_problems_and_solutions.jpg

First off I would say thank you to Mr Soh, for His friendly availability to answer to some of our questions, for sure already linked in your books, that you've introduced during the NaQ event, on September."Discus: the naked truth" and"Discus: Problems and solutions", where we have met each others, bought your books, and had some talk.

I'm going ahead to my question. A summary of the paths (crossing, selection and enbreeding)that take until a discus like your "Spotted Face", starts and go genetically till the final wonderful pattern with wich basic amazonian wild discus? Green, Blue or brown ? And the other 50% of the genome, belongs to wich kind of bred discus?

Green, Blue o brown?

Hello guys,

I am just trying my luck......clicking on this and then to see whether I can have the reply page to answer. I got lucky and got straight into this page......ha! ha! ha!....I will learn Italian in the future....or should I say, read Italian.......I promise....and also how to make proscuitto....

Anyway, thanks for the introduction and it maybe of no surprise to some that one of my earliest overseas customers was from Italy....Aquario Nettuno which had stopped operation now. If my memory doesn't fail me....it was back in 1990and the one strain/creation that was very popular (with Italians) from me back then was BABYFACE DISCUS. Even when I walk around the Zoomark exhibition back then, people would approach me and ask "You, babyface???" And I am sure most of you are aware that my personal email address is also babyface@singnet.com.sg...ha! ha! ha!

Do you want to know why the name 'babyface' made a strong impact on me? Well, @ the age of 19, I went to Thailand with a couple of friends and we were enjoying the best of life (*_*).....and a group of girls we acquainted with saw me for the first time....and called me 'Babyface'......(don't tell my wife)........

O.K.....enough of that nonsense......back to seriousness...

In many of the new strains or variants, it is inevitable to have mutants as part of the gene pool. All discus came from nature and as been of common knowledge, we have the wild Green, wild Blue, Wild Brown and Wild Heckel. If we were to confine our breeding program among these 4 basic wild variants (whether it is considered 3 or 4 species scientifically), we will reach stagnation in pattern improvement....cobalt?

Nature knows the limitation and to give a helping hand, mutants spontaneously sprouted from the the limited gene pool...allowing space for further phenotypic expansion. Having said that, they are still considered natural and still very much DISCUS.

Back to the question proper, in the making of Spotted face, it is a long process and we have to start from the creation of Leopard Snake. Leopard snake has genetic material from Green spotted wild, Turquoise and 14 bars Snakeskin. When a Leopard Snakeskin is established, it is unwise to keep breeding LSS with LSS. This will reverse the pattern or you can say...improve the intensity of the stripe pattern resulting in merging of strip forming turquoise patches on parts of a LSS. This is undesirable as spots must be uniform and homogenous. It is explained in my books.

So the best cross-breeding program is to breed LSS with Turquoise Leopard with as many large spots from similar genetic make-up. I am sure many know that when you cross a LSS with another LSS, spotted turquoises (or Leopard as we address them) are produced too. So this is what I am referring to.

As to spotted face, it can be achieved through selective breeding.....discussed in my second book. Very long explanation and to make it short, one has to cross a LSS with a Leopard with spotted or broken strip on the face and also of very red coloration on the face.

The very early LSS have fairly straight stripes on the face (like the brown facial stripes or the 14 bars Snakskin facial pattern) but as this strain is bred further, the pattern of the snake pattern on the body changes into web-form and later runs into the face...hence facial stripes changed too and new snake curvy stripe-pattern emerged on the face too...trapping the red-spots and through selective breeding (is extremely important), the face snake-stripes merged and cross each other...forming into cubicals.

Have I answered your question?

Take care,

Andrew

Thank you very much, Mr Soh.

ASAP we'll translate for the all readers your comprehensive response.

I must say that, even if the forum is (unfortunately) only in italian lang., you've been able to check the options and do all without any help.

Thank you really.

Grazie Mr Soh,

Take care,

Andrew

Oh darling!!!How is possible that you always talk about prosciutto??!!! :funny: :funny: You've to learn Italian; but I hope that never and ever someone will teach you to make prosciutto.....if not.....oh my God!!!

Now I've the opportunity to stop your love with prosciutto. Or, using a word you spent in dedications of your "Naked truth"your romancing with prosciutto. You'll talk about prosciutto yet, and next time i come to Singapore, I'll do my best to meat your wife to say her about your "enjoying the best of life"!!!AHAHAH!!!!!

Thanks to both, for this injection of culture, the real one.

I've spent a wonderful day with Gennaro yesterday and he had *only* nice words, talking about you, the way you work, the way you spend your time for the correct information mostly about genetics and the world that surrounds this not-easy-to-treat argument.

Thanks to both of you.

Saluti

Jamy Diamond

Your response to my question nicely and flawlessly.

I know that such a question like that would arouse the greatest interest overseas, but also because you are masters of Asian breeders for spots and beyond.

You have condensed in "few lines" your reproductive genetic program that now became your wonderful business card.

Everything I read is immediately stored in my database(brain) of information and culture about the discus, and I say thank you very much for these gems that you have given to all of us.

Take care

Jamy Diamond
